Hydrogen Codes and Standards

Hydrogen safety codes and standardsWhat are codes and standards?
Codes and standards are collections of requirements that help to protect public health, safety and general welfare. They are developed for virtually all industries that rely on construction, engineering components or equipment. To make sure hydrogen systems, including fuel cells and other equipment, are installed correctly and located in an environment in which they can operate safely, the codes and standards related to hydrogen are continually being revised, expanded, and improved. A large number of organizations play a role in this process.

Voting at an ICC meetingWhat is a code?
A code is a compilation of provisions covering broad subject matter which is suitable for adoption into law independently of other codes and standards. They specify the minimum acceptable level of safety for constructed objects such as buildings and other structures. The building code becomes law of a particular jurisdiction when formally enacted by the appropriate authority, like a State Fire Marshal or building official.  Examples:  International Fire Code, National Electrical Code.

FCX ClarityWhat is a standard?
A standard is a document which contains technical specifications or other precise criteria designed to be used consistently as a rule or guideline. Compliance with them is not compulsory as they are written. However, compliance can become compulsory when they are referenced by another standard or code that can be adopted into law.  Examples:  NFPA 852 "Standard for the Installation of Stationary Fuel Cell Power Systems" or SAE J2600 "Compressed Hydrogen Surface Vehicle Refuelling Connection Devices."

NHA Action with Codes and Standards Development
The NHA has been an active voice in the writing and improvement of codes and standards for almost two decades. The NHA:
  • Provides a unified and experienced voice for the various hydrogen and fuel cell industry stakeholders
  • Works for cohesion amongst a large number of code- and standard-making bodies
  • Collaborates with government, industry and others to provide valuable information and educational resources
The NHA, in association with the U.S. Department of Energy and U.S. Fuel Cell Council, publishes the monthly Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Safety Report. Here you can find a variety of important hydrogen and fuel cell information, such as:
